Listening for the Word God is Whispering Over Your Year
At the start of every year, we’re surrounded by noise—goals to set, plans to make, and expectations to meet. But what if, before all of that, God is already whispering something over your year? Not a list. Not a resolution. Just a word. A word meant to anchor you and reveal what He is quietly cultivating beneath the surface. His voice doesn’t always come with volume or urgency; more often, it comes gently, requiring us to slow down long enough to listen. And when we do, the word we hear isn’t random—it’s intentional, personal, and exactly what we need for the season ahead.
I was first introduced to this idea through a women’s group I sometimes attend. Every year, they choose a word for the year—something they pray over, carry with them, and allow God to unfold meaning through as the year progresses. Every year I tell myself to participate but never slowed down enough to truly engage.
But this year is different.
This Isn’t About Picking a Word—It’s About Listening
Choosing a word for the year isn’t about selecting something that sounds good or fits a theme. It’s about asking God to highlight what He wants to do in you during this season.
And that takes intentionality.
God doesn’t always speak with a shout. Many times, He speaks in a still, small voice. That means we often have to press in, to quiet ourselves, to make room, to listen beyond the noise of our own thoughts and expectations.
When the word comes, it won’t feel forced. It will resonate. You’ll feel something when you hear it—even if you don’t fully understand it yet. That response in your spirit is often confirmation that the word didn’t come from you.
Make Room for the Holy Spirit to Speak
You're not waiting for a word to magically appear. You are positioning yourself to hear the Holy Spirit speak. When you quiet yourself before Him, He reveals what you need—not always all at once, and not always with explanation.
What He reveals may come during prayer.
It may surface through Scripture, a sermon, or a conversation.
It may come up quietly in a moment of stillness.
Or it may come out of your own mouth before your mind fully catches up.
When the Spirit of God highlights something, don’t dismiss it.
Write it down.
Then bring it back to Him. Ask Him what He is revealing, shaping, or preparing in you through it. Ask Him what this season requires of you. The word is not the focus—it’s the fruit of listening.
You Might Be Given One Word—or Two
There’s no rule that says it has to be just 1 word. Sometimes God highlights 2—connected, layered, or unfolding together over time.
For me, while I was praying today, the word newness came out of my mouth unexpectedly. The moment I heard it, I knew. There was no hesitation. My spirit immediately recognized it as my word for the year.
Almost instantly, another word followed: shift.
That word wasn’t new. I had been hearing it toward the end of 2025—almost as preparation for what was ahead. Hearing it again felt like confirmation. Like God was saying that what He is shifting, He is also making new.
Newness and shift.
Not random. Not rushed. Intentional.
Trust the Direction God Is Giving You
What God reveals to you may stretch you.
It may not make sense right away.
It may require trust before understanding.
But if the God has highlighted something in you, you can trust that He is faithful to complete what He has begun.
This year, along with asking, “What do I want to accomplish?
”Also ask, “God, what are You doing in me?”
Then remain attentive.
Stay obedient.
And move forward in step with the Holy Spirit, trusting that He will order your steps one moment at a time.
Blessings,
